adidas 4D
adidas 4D lattice midsoles represent a groundbreaking leap in performance footwear, combining athlete data with the precision of 3D printing to redefine how shoes interact with the human body. Partnering with Carbon3D and leveraging their Digital Light Synthesis technology, the adidas Innovation team explored thousands of potential lattice structures, computationally and mechanically, to create midsoles optimized for forward motion and mechanical efficiency.
My work spanned the commercialization of six adidas 4D footwear models, from SS17 FUTURECRAFT 4D to FW22 4DFWD 2, addressing challenges in manufacturability, durability, and performance. This included developing new test equipment, quality standards, and inspection methods, as well as a four-month onsite DOE with Carbon3D to refine lattice behavior and material properties.

These efforts culminated in innovations like the 4DFWD midsole, designed to convert vertical impact into forward propulsion, reducing peak braking forces by 15%. Precision-engineered lattice structures push the boundaries of what’s possible in footwear design, delivering a unique gliding sensation for athletes across the globe.
Role: Prototyping, manufacturing development, material testing, test creation, DOE execution, and ongoing innovation.
